2020 SPANISH ALMOND FORECAST

The published data of the Ministry of Agriculture of almond hectares in regular plantation for the year 2019 are 582,174 Has. in dry condition orchards and 105,051 in irrigated orchards. Of which 507,263 are bearing hectares for dry condition orchards and 79,727 are bearing hectares for the irrigated orchards.
Based on the hectares data of the Ministry of Agriculture, the associations AEOFRUSE (Spanish Association of Almond Growers Organizations) and DESCALMENDRA (Spanish Almond Sheller Association) have made a preliminary estimate for the 2020 almond crop projecting an increase in bearing hectares of 20,000 for irrigated orchards and 11,000 for dry condition orchards.
Preliminary estimate for the 2020 almond crop = 115,633 MTON
The 2020 crop is characterized by the following factors
:
  - Very good weather conditions during the bloom period in all production areas.
  - Absence of significant frost damage that may represent a decrease in production, such as those that affected the 2019 crop.
  - Rainfall above average during winter and early spring.
    -    Deep impact of new and recent bearing irrigated orchards.
     -  Development of cryptogamic diseases in various production areas as a consequence of the high rainfall.
     -  A certain alternate bearing nature of trees in some areas, mainly in dry condition orchards, but with a large size of fruits.
Moreover, the 2019 harvest has been revised up to 94,000 mton. The upward differential over the published estimate of 78.089 mton. is mainly due to new bearing hectares and an underestimation average of 100 kg/ha. in the irrigated orchards. For the current 2019/20 season, is estimated an ending stock of 6,000 mton.
